I'm Going Down

The first song I wrote for my second album, "Hook, Line & Sinker" is the headline for this article. As you listen to it you'll hear it has a different flavor than my other material. Those of you who've heard it might label it as EMO, or Punk. The truth is I don't really know what the subgenera is.

All I know is I listened to a song called "Powers Cosmic" by a local Pensacola band called "The Deadly Fists of Kung Fu" and started writing from there. What came out were 5 different musical passages that sounded like they fit together. And I threw out the last passage.

From there I tried to come up with some lyrics that had to do with riptides. So, I made a short list of things, like:

Riptide

Drown

High & Dry

Going Down (with the ship)

And from the list, ideas started popping in my head about how to link these words to a relationship with a woman and how that relationship was failing.

So, relating a bad relationship to a boat is sort of like relating a young woman at a party to a car. And this is what KISS did with "Rock 'n' Roll All Nite". Gene Simmons wrote, "You show us everything you got, You keep on dancing and the room is hot, You drive us wild, we'll drive you crazy." The word "drive" is the part that links the young woman to a car. In the next verse, Gene writes, "You say you wanna go for a spin". Hence car, again.

While a bit subliminal, the reference is there. On my song, I'm a little more blatant. Here are lyrics:

I washed up, I went all in

Can’t stop myself from fallin’ in

Feel myself drown, I’m goin’ down

It's too late, I can't turn back

I took the bait, you made me crack

Feel myself drown, I’m goin’ down

I can't hear a single word you say

Your riptide keeps pulling me away

Yeah, I’m sinkin like a stone

I’m Goin’ Down, Down, Down

Caught up in your undertow

Goin’ Down, Down, Down

Your love is like Ridalin

I’m treading water, I can’t swim

Feel myself drown

I’m goin’ down

Can’t you hear me scream?

Leave me high and dry

The woman of my dreams

Watching my dreams die

You don’t hear a single word I say

Your Riptide keeps pulling me away

Yeah, I’m sinkin like a stone

I’m Goin’ Down, Down, Down

Caught up in your undertow

I’m Goin’ Down, Down, Down (yeah)

(oh!)

You can’t hear a single word I say

Your Riptide keeps pulling me away

Yeah, I’m sinkin like a stone

I’m Goin’ Down, Down, Down

Caught up in your undertow

I’m Goin’ Down, Down, Down

Yeah, I’m sinkin like a stone

I’m Goin’ Down, Down, Down

Caught up in your undertow

I’m Goin’ Down, Down, Down

Down, Down, Down

Down, Down, Down (can you feel it?)

Down, Down, Down

Down, Down, Down

And here is the link to the song:

Let me know what you think.

Big aspirations don't start from nothing. They are born on the wings of frustration. And those wings, if you trust why they sprouted, can propel you to change the world. But it won't happen over night

I knew I didn't have enough money to finish the whole album. In fact, I was crushed when I looked at my finances and realized Hook, Line & Sinker wouldn't get completed in one fell swoop. Not knowing
