Searching For The Perfect Pizza

Updated: Jan 14

Moving to Maryland was challenging. Getting stuff moved in, fitting in with the new job, and dealing with monumental familiar upheavals. Who knew finding a pizza would be added to the list? And who knew Pizza Hut would be the winner so far?

The first strike out came from Ledo's. They have two stores, one in La Plata and one in Waldorf. My wife and I sat down for a Sunday pie. It was their version of a supreme. And it was horrible. The bread had the snap-crackle-pop of a Pop Tart. And the rest of the pie was as jumbled mess of everything you'd find in someone's refrigerator. Indistinct, bland and boring. Even the bacon was over cooked and flavorless.

The next stop was Pizza Hotline, a local favorite. They also have two stores, one in La Plata and one in Charlotte Hall. They've been in business for 40 years or so. And we ordered a Philly Cheese Steak specialty pizza. I use a supreme or something I know to judge how good something is, so there's no direct comparison. But I can tell you, I wasn't impressed by it. Sure there was cheese and peppers and some beef you'd expect from a cheesesteak. But overall, it didn't work. The pie was bland. If there were saving graces here, they would be the bread and the sauce. Of the two, the bread was the star of the show. It was chewy on the inside and crisp on the outside.

And that leads me to a conclusion. Pizza Hut. Still consistent, and still make the best supreme pizza with hand tossed dough. Until I can find a mom and pop pizza joint that lives up to their standards, I'll be on the quest to find my favorite street food of all time here in Maryland. If you have suggestions, send them my way.

In the meantime, enjoy this short footage of Statuary Hall in the US Capitol building. They serve a mean pepperoni pizza in there. And if you like coffee...it ain't bad, either. There are benefits to living a few miles from the center of the universe. You can learn some good stuff, and at the same time, get some decent grub at the restaurant on the second floor. Other photo's are below. See if you can find my reference to Greenday in the pics.

Oh, and pick up a copy of my CD, Hook, Line & Sinker today!
